Youth
in Progress (YIP)
Over
the past several years, kids involved in systems throughout
the commonwealth have become more dependent on that system
and are not exiting the system with the skills needed to become
productive contributing members of their communities. Through
the Youth in Progress afterschool program, teenagers will
be assisted in their transition to adulthood. The will acquire
the necessary tools and skillsets to function on their own.
The focus of the YIP program is to help youth develop daily
living skills such as money management, interpersonal and
professional communication, conflict resolution, job coaching,
and healthy living skills. In addition to adolescents involved
with state systems we offer this program to any teenager who
wants to both develop and demonstate his or her own individual
leadership skills. Empowering youth and developing their leadership
capabilitites will provide them the opportunities to significantly
contribute to their communities through the community service
projects they will be involved in as part of the program.
Examples of this include organizing and executing food drives
that benefit local food banks, volunteering at the local senior
center, animal shelter or homeless shelters. This instills
in them a sense of civic responsibility and the value of giving
back to the communities.
Robert
F. Kennedy Children's Action Corps
The
Youth in Progress Driving School is an educational program
supported by the Robert F. Kennedy Children's Action Corps.
RFK Children's Action Corps was founded in 1969 as an active
memorial to the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who believed
that society has a responsibility to take care of its most
helpless members. Our programs are focused on helping children
and adolescents with significant emotional and behavioral
problems deal appropriately with past hurts, develop self-esteem,
and become contributing members of society. We also provide
support services for families and preventive programs for
youths living in areas with high rates of violence and crime.
Since our founding, we have steadily increased the number
of programs and services we provide to young people and their
families, including residential programs, community outreach
programs, and adventure education. We collaborate with state
agencies – including the departments of Youth Services, Social
Services, Mental Health, Education, and Early Education and
Care – to keep children out of trouble, in school, and on
a path of healing.
